A treasured reserve from our private cellar, imported by the authorized agent of the era, Finesse Co., Ltd. We recently examined the 2004 Condrieu. André Perret is, of course, a preeminent producer synonymous with the appellation of Condrieu. After scouring all available literature, we found that Condrieu is almost universally recommended for early consumption, with virtually no established critique regarding its potential to mature as an aged wine. Ultimately, the only way to know was to pull the cork. We opened our worst-conditioned bottle as a sample. Upon opening, while the aromatics were sweetly magnificent, the palate proved underwhelming, leaving us momentarily disheartened and wondering if the wine truly defied long-term aging. Yet, as time passed in the glass, the aromas and flavors began to unfurl dramatically. Within hours, the tasting experience reached a level that can only be described as magnificent—surpassing by far any Viognier-based wine we had previously tasted. This, we believe, was the magic woven by its signature 'acidity of a thousand shimmering hues.' We monitored its evolution over the course of several days, and far from fading, the wine continued to blossom continuously. Experiences like this are rarely recorded in books, yet they offer a wonderful reminder of the profound mystery of wine.
