VOLNAY 1ER CRU CHAMPANS Volnay 1er Cru Champans 100% Pinot Noir. The name "Champans" derives from the word for a sloped vineyard, perfectly describing a terroir characterized by gracefully sweeping contours. The estate owns two east-west oriented parcels totaling roughly 4 hectares, with vines averaging 35 years of age. Among Volnay's premier crus, this terroir features a high proportion of red clay, forming a lean plot where the lower sections are gravely and clayey, while the upper slopes reveal rugged limestone bedrock. This wine achieves a harmonious balance between the delicacy and mineral nuance imparted by the limestone and the power and volume derived from the clay, making it one of the most faithful expressions of Volnay's true character. The spring and summer of 2022 were characterized by persistent dry heat, culminating in a genuinely scorching season with virtually no rainfall. Naturally, this led to an early ripening of the grapes, prompting harvest to begin on August 23rd—the second earliest date on record following 2020. However, much like the hot and dry years of 2019 and 2020, this vintage avoided the typical drawbacks of such conditions and delivered magnificent results. With yields remaining in line with historical averages and the quality of both red and white grapes being utterly faultless, this stands as a rare and unprecedented vintage.
