Nicolas-Jay — the wines we carry

Jean-Nicolas Méo is the third-generation proprietor of Domaine Méo-Camuzet in the village of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy. He continues to craft magnificent wines while upholding the invaluable teachings of his mentor, Henri Jayer. An urbanite born in Paris, Jean-Nicolas initially studied economics rather than winemaking. During a period of study abroad in the United States, he crossed paths with Jay Boberg—who would later become his co-founder at Nicolas-Jay—igniting his passion for winemaking.

Jay Boberg was the president of a digital music distribution company, where he nurtured and launched the careers of numerous musicians. At the same time, as a member of Burgundy's Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, he shared a deep passion for wine that mirrored his love for music. He had been actively tasting Oregon wines since 1983 and exploring their potential. During a 1983 visit to the Willamette Valley, he was captivated by the region's extraordinary potential and firmly resolved to embark on a winemaking venture alongside Jean-Nicolas.

The connection between Jean-Nicolas and Jay Boberg began when Jean-Nicolas was studying economics in the United States and found himself in classes with Jay Boberg's sister. The two quickly hit it off, bonding over a shared passion for wine, which ultimately led Jean-Nicolas to return to Vosne-Romanée to take over the family domaine. Sensing that the climate and terroir of Oregon's Willamette Valley shared a profound affinity with Burgundy, he grew increasingly intrigued by the future of Oregon wine. In 2012, when Jay Boberg—who had spent years exploring the potential of Oregon wine—proposed establishing a winery in the Willamette Valley, Jean-Nicolas decided to channel the knowledge and experience he had cultivated in Vosne-Romanée into Oregon Pinot Noir, and thus Nicolas-Jay was born.
