2017 was warm from spring and precocious — by the end of March some plots already had open leaves. Late April brought a hint of frost, as in 2016, but burning straw to create a smoke screen averted the damage. The warmth continued through May and flowering passed without trouble. July was scorching and veraison began mid-month, a precocity reminiscent of 2009. Heavy rain at the end of July thickened the skins, and fine August weather ripened both seeds and fruit to what one could fairly call perfect health; there was no doubt 2017 would be a superb vintage. Refined yet richly flavoured, it already exudes elegance and grandeur. Full of energy and elegant at once, this is a wine that will captivate even the most discerning enthusiast.
