The winter of 2018–19 was very wet, but spring brought a recovery and warmth. Frost fell in April, though fortunately without major damage. Growth could not be called smooth, however: a sudden cold snap during flowering caused coulure and millerandage. Once the weather recovered in summer and the heat returned, ripening proceeded well and we began picking on 12 September, earlier than planned. Like 2018, 2019 was a hot year, but rainfall was lower, so the berries were small and concentrated: quality was superb, though the crop was small. Picking slightly early has preserved freshness while giving an elegant, well-balanced wine. The jinx of vintages ending in “9” evidently still holds — this may fairly be called an elegant and great year. (Producer’s comments on the 2019 vintage / Source: Finesse Co., Ltd.)
