2021 brought an extraordinary run of foul weather; rot spread through the vineyards and the crop fell by 75% against a normal year — a genuinely catastrophic season. For that reason, where the parcels would normally be vinified separately, all the cuvées were brought together and released under the name “XXI”. In Didier Dagueneau’s long history, combining the cuvées in this way has happened perhaps once before, if at all, and never has production been so small. And yet, having tasted it recently, I found the wine a case of misfortune turned to blessing: fresh green-fruit nuances with silex, refined acidity and abundant minerality, the mineral fruit that is their signature, and a taut, linear palate — a Sauvignon Blanc character one can no longer find in these warming years. Personally I think it splendid, and I recommend it warmly to fellow enthusiasts.
