VOLNAY 1ER CRU CLOS DES DUCS (MONOPOLE) 100% Pinot Noir. A monopole situated immediately adjacent to the domaine's winery, this parcel was owned by the Dukes of Burgundy during the Middle Ages. Enclosed by stone walls, the vineyard spans 2.15 hectares with vines up to 65 years old, divided into four distinct zones according to age. Featuring well-drained, limestone-marl soils with low iron content, the east-to-southeast-facing exposition enjoys exceptional sunlight, allowing the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness. Elegant and multifaceted, this is a generous, energetic Volnay built for long-term aging. The 2022 growing season was marked by dry, hot conditions from the spring onwards, with virtually no rain through the summer, bringing unrelenting, intense heat. Naturally, the grapes matured rapidly, prompting harvest to begin on August 23rd—the second earliest date on record following 2020. However, much like the warm and dry vintages of 2019 and 2020, the typical pitfalls of such years were entirely absent, resulting in a magnificent harvest. Yields were in line with historical averages, and the quality of both red and white grapes was utterly flawless—a rare vintage of a caliber seldom experienced before. Among the Pinot Noir wines, for instance, 'Fremier' offers a silky texture coupled with ample generosity and superb acidity. 'Champans' vibrantly expresses the quintessential character of Volnay through its lively spiciness and rich, elegant fruit profile. The 'Clos des Ducs', while undeniably powerful and complex, delivers a juicy, bite-into-the-fruit immediacy right from the attack, achieving a balance that makes it wonderfully approachable even in its youth.
