Pale, delicate, and ethereal, yet possessing an extraordinary depth of umami—a profile quite distinct from Ostrea. An artistic village-level Gevrey-Chambertin makes its entrance. While terms like "masculine" and "wild" were once de rigueur for Gevrey, the arrival of Trapet's wines seems to have introduced an entirely new vocabulary: elegance. I described it as pale, as light, yet please make no mistake: this is intended as the highest possible praise for a truly artistic wine. Such an innovative expression of flavor stands in stark contrast to Mr. Trapet's gentle and modest personality. That juxtaposition is endlessly fascinating. As is often true of their Alsace wines, they occasionally release creations that feel almost radically avant-garde. There is a daring brilliance to them—wines that effortlessly shatter established conventions, worthy of an avant-garde artist. Yet because these expressions are firmly anchored in tradition, they never feel like acts of destruction, but rather as visionary new interpretations. As an ardent admirer, it never fails to awaken my deepest curiosity. Moving away from the sheer power that once defined Gevrey, their goal appears to be drawing out the most profound, artistic dimensions of the terroir. That, at least, is how I interpret Mr. Trapet's enduring vision.
