Domaine Alain Mathias — the wines we carry

After completing his military service, current owner Alain Mathias participated in a grape harvest in Chablis in 1979, which introduced him to the profession of viticulture and captured his fascination. In the early 1980s, he cleared 7 hectares of vineyards in the village of Epineuil within the Tonnerrois district near Chablis. At a time when others like him were beginning to emerge with small plots to try their hand at winemaking, these pioneers paved the way for the establishment of the "Bourgogne Epineuil" appellation in 1993. His winemaking philosophy is guided by the belief that crafting exceptional wines requires constant reflection rather than adherence to a manual, observing the vineyards to judge whether human intervention or leaving things to nature is appropriate. Today, his son Bastien—who completed his degree in oenology at the University of Dijon—along with Bastien's wife Carole, who also studied oenology, are involved in running the domaine while upholding Alain's teachings.

In addition to Epineuil, they hold 4 hectares of vineyards in Chablis, bringing their total holdings to approximately 11 hectares, primarily planted to Pinot Noir. Driven by the pioneering spirit of this region to continually seek improvement, they adopted organic farming in 2000. Since 2005, they have ceased the use of herbicides, managing weed control entirely through mechanical cultivation in all vineyards. Organic certification from Ecocert was awarded to their Bourgogne Epineuil and Tonnerre in the 2013 vintage, followed by Chablis and Petit Chablis in the 2015 vintage. Harvesting is done entirely by hand with 100% destemming, and pumps are avoided to prevent stressing the wine, with all bottling carried out in-house.
